SS-31, also catalogued as elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide belonging to the Szeto-Schiller family of mitochondria-targeting sequences.
Its defining structural property is an alternating aromatic-cationic motif that gives the molecule affinity for cardiolipin, a phospholipid essentially unique to the inner mitochondrial membrane. That affinity is what makes it a standard reagent in mitochondrial membrane studies.
The 2,6-dimethyltyrosine residue is a non-standard amino acid, and the D-arginine at position 1 confers resistance to aminopeptidase cleavage.
