It is a metabolite of Melanotan II, differing at the C-terminus: PT-141 carries a free carboxylic acid where Melanotan II is amidated. That single difference substantially shifts the receptor-subtype selectivity profile, which is why the two are studied as distinct compounds rather than as variants.
The lactam bridge that closes the ring is stable under normal handling but the tryptophan residue makes the sequence light-sensitive.
