Lot traceability, third-party HPLC and LAL testing, and documentation practice - the things worth checking before you trust a research peptide supplier.
The single most informative question to ask a supplier is whether their certificates of analysis are issued per manufacturing lot or per product line. A certificate is an analytical record of one specific synthesis batch - it is a statement about the material in a particular vial, identified by lot number, not a statement about the product generally.
A supplier who publishes one certificate for a product and reuses it across every batch sold under that name is, functionally, telling customers what some other batch looked like at some point in the past. That is a materially weaker guarantee than a fresh certificate tied to the exact lot shipped.
HPLC and LAL testing performed by an independent third-party laboratory carries more weight than the same tests run entirely in-house, because it removes any incentive for a supplier to under-report an unfavourable result. This does not mean in-house testing is worthless - it is a normal part of release testing at most suppliers - but a certificate description should make clear which parts of the testing, if any, were performed externally.
A supplier that cannot answer a direct question about who performed the testing on a given certificate is giving less information than one who names the laboratory and testing method used.
At minimum, a certificate worth relying on should state the lot number, the HPLC purity figure with enough method detail to be meaningful, an endotoxin result in EU/mg from a LAL assay, and ideally a mass spectrometry result confirming identity rather than relying on purity alone to imply it. Salt form - acetate or TFA - is a further detail that a thorough certificate will state.
Missing any one of these does not automatically disqualify a supplier, but it narrows what the certificate can actually tell a researcher relying on it, and it is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering after material is already on the bench.
The lot number printed on the vial's crimp label should resolve directly, without ambiguity, to the certificate for that exact batch. This is the practical test of whether a supplier's documentation system is real: a lot number that fails to resolve, resolves to the wrong batch, or requires manual follow-up to sort out is a sign the underlying record-keeping is not as rigorous as the marketing copy suggests.
A researcher who cannot quickly retrieve the certificate matching the vial in front of them has effectively lost the ability to verify what they are working with, regardless of how good that batch's actual testing was.
How a supplier handles documentation in ordinary, unremarkable cases is a better signal than how they respond when something goes wrong. A supplier who makes lot-level certificates easy to find and easy to match to a specific vial, as a matter of routine rather than on request, is demonstrating a documentation practice built for verification rather than for appearance.
This is worth checking before an order is placed, not after a result fails to reproduce and the certificate turns out to be harder to track down than expected.
A few patterns are worth treating as warning signs on their own: certificates that never change despite repeated reorders of supposedly fresh stock, purity or endotoxin figures reported with implausibly round numbers across every lot, an inability to name the testing method or laboratory used, and a lot number system that does not actually map to distinguishable batches.
None of these is proof of a problem in isolation, but taken together they describe a documentation system built to look complete rather than to actually support verification - which is precisely the distinction a lot-level, resolvable certificate system is designed to avoid.
